You spent good money on those braids. You sat for hours. Your stylist worked magic.
Now… how do you make them last?
At Tete Hazel, we see clients fall into two groups:
- Group A: Braids look fresh for 6-8 weeks
- Group B: Braids look fuzzy, loose, and tired by week 3
The difference isn’t luck. It’s maintenance.
Here’s your complete guide to keeping braids beautiful, scalp healthy, and edges intact – without pain.
Week 1-2: The Settling Period
Do this:
- Keep your scalp clean – Use a diluted shampoo (1 part shampoo, 3 parts water) in a spray bottle. Spray between braid rows, gently massage, then rinse.
- Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet – Cotton pillowcases = friction = fuzz. Satin = smooth = fresh braids.
- Light oil, not heavy grease – Jojoba, argan, or braid spray. Focus on scalp, not the synthetic hair.
Avoid:
- Heavy creams or butters (they build up and attract dirt)
- Washing too aggressively (pat, don’t scrub)
Week 3-4: The Maintenance Zone
By now, your natural hair has started growing out. You might see some “bird’s nests” (loose strands) or frizz.
Fix it:
- Mousse for frizz – Light foam mousse on a soft toothbrush. Brush downward along each braid. Magic.
- Retie loose braids – If one braid feels loose at the root, use a bobby pin to secure it (or come see us for a quick touch-up).
- Refresh your edges – Light gel + satin scarf for 10 minutes = laid edges without tight tension.
Watch out for:
- Itching that doesn’t stop (could be product buildup)
- Pain at the roots (tension, not normal)
Week 5-6: The Decision Point
At this stage, ask yourself:
Keep braids? Only if they still feel comfortable and look presentable. Continue gentle washing + edge control.
Take them down? Don’t wait until they’re matted. The longer you wait, the more breakage happens during takedown.
How to remove braids without damage:
- Cut the synthetic hair at the knot (never pull it out)
- Spray leave-in conditioner on each section
- Detangle from ends to roots
- Deep condition immediately
Pro tips from Tete Hazel
- Don’t let braids get wet unless you dry them – Wet braids left damp = mildew smell. Spray bottle or shower cap are your friends.
- Never sleep on wet braids – Frizz explosion waiting to happen.
- If it hurts, say something – Even weeks after installation, pain means something is wrong. Come back. We’ll fix it.
